Born in Edinburgh in 1973.

On 6 October 1973, Sean and Lesley McVey opened The Breadwinner Bakery on Bruntsfield Place.

Their ambition was to create a different kind of bakery—one that respected the craft, art and science of baking. Within days, queues were forming outside the shop, and Breadwinner began building a reputation for products with real flavour and character.

The bakery has changed considerably since then, but the founding principle remains: progress should never come at the expense of the product.

Traditional knowledge. Modern production.

Good baking depends on judgement: understanding dough, fermentation, temperature, texture and time.

That knowledge still shapes how we work today. Our team combines skilled bakery experience with carefully controlled modern equipment and production systems. Some processes depend on touch and instinct; others benefit from precision, consistency and scale.

For our customers, the result is straightforward: distinctive bakery products that taste exceptional, perform reliably and arrive ready to work in service.

Since 2021, Breadwinner has been an entirely plant-based bakery.

From sourdough, rolls and croissants to cinnamon buns, New York rolls and traybakes, every recipe is developed around flavour, texture and performance—not around compromise.

For cafés, hospitality businesses, foodservice operators and retailers, that means one distinctive range that can work for more customers, menus and occasions. Plant-based is an inclusive strength, but the product must always earn its place through taste.
